Weekend Wrap-Up

I had a great and very busy weekend. The two most exciting parts of my weekend? ICE! at National Harbor and putting the last of my Christmas decorations up!

For those of you in the DC area, please take my advice and check out ICE! It is amazing! It is a Christmas themed exhibit where everything is made of ice. The vignettes are spectacular and range from a ten foot slide you can ride to a full, life-sized nativity scene. I will warn you that it is cold - it is basically a self-guided tour through a large tent that is kept at - gulp - nine degrees. They do offer huge, unfashionable parkas as you enter but no gloves so you must bring your own. Trust me - you will need them! Here are some pics....

My friend Rachel and I checking out the gorgeous Gaylord Hotel at National Harbor - the Christmas decorations were amazing!

This is a picture of the castle that doubles as an ice slide!

My photos do not do it justice - it is really amazing!

Now, for something equally amazing - my Christmas decor. I'm happy to have everything up and ready to enjoy my tree every night when I come home.

My cute little tree! This is probably the last year I will be able to use this little guy - I'm running out of space for all my ornaments!

One of my favorite new ornaments!

One of my favorite cheap decor ideas - decorating with cranberries!

Hostess Gifts

First of all, I hope you all had a fabulous Thanksgiving! I certainly did - I spent time with family in Florida, shopped, relaxed, enjoyed the warm weather, and - most importantly - ate a lot! Thanksgiving is really a time to reflect on what it is we are most thankful for and I could not feel more blessed to have the incredible family I have. I am so lucky!

Now that the holidays are in full swing I thought a great post would be focused on hostess gifts. Many of us will be attending holiday parties and it is always nice to bring a little something for the hostess. Obviously, flowers and food are always lovely but these special items are sure to get you invited back again and again!

Love these personalized candles from Pottery Barn! I've already ordered one for myself... :)

This beautiful box is filled with pre-planted paperwhites. Just add water and watch them grow!

I love these Mariposa napkin holders! There are a variety of napkin weights to choose from and beautiful cocktail napkins come with each holder. A great gift!

For something a little less pricey, a selection of cocktail napkins always makes a nice gift. I love these new Caspari patterns!

This candle is so fragrant and amazing - it just smells like Christmas! Bonus - if you have an artificial tree, this smells just like the real thing.

Another option - pick up a cute plate (like this one I got at Homegoods for $5 - can you believe that?) Bake some treats and add the recipe to make this an extra special and personal gift.

Christmas Decor

If I had unlimited funds, I would decorate every inch of my house for Christmas. I love it! Here are some of the items I have my eye on for this Christmas...

I love this garland! It actually looks very similar to the wreath I bought for my front door last year.

Love these ornaments! I don't know if I have enough room on my tree....

Have I ever mentioned my obsession with square boxwood wreaths? Want this!!!

How cute are these guest towels? I may have already purchased one for myself.... :)

Also love this wreath. I have a bit of a wreath fetish....

And a bit of a guest towel fetish as well.

Case in point, the third guest towel that I want. I only have 1.5 bathrooms!

Love these trees - beautiful!

Finally.... can my house please look like this someday?

Please Go Away

For all of you who don't know who this is (and how could you not if you've watched the news in the past week) this is Carrie Prejean, former Miss California whose claim to fame was her answer at the Miss USA pageant. When asked if she felt the rights of marriage should be extended to all people - gay or straight - she answered that she believed marriage should be between a man and a woman. Now, while I do not agree with her, I fully support her in her answer. After all, aren't we allowed to have and express differing points of view in this country? However, her latest press tour promoting her book and all the media surrounding it has really begun to irritate me. First, there were stories about her breast implants, then the topless photos, and now a sex tape she allegedly made when she was 17 years old. My question is this - if she is such a good Christian woman as she claims - a supporter of conservative values - why is she posing for topless photos and making sex tapes? I find it very hard to believe that a true conservative would behave the way she has in the past few years. I think what Carrie Prejean is an opportunist. She gave her answer and capitalized on the media frenzy it created. Now, she is using her 15 minutes to make public appearances and sell books. Can you tell that it bothers me? It does. Click here to see her embarrassing appearance on Larry King. Yikes.

Opinions Please!

I am so sorry I have been such a bad blogger lately! Things have been so busy. My weekend has been pretty boring with the exception of last night when I had a first date. I have been doing match.com for about two months now and to be completely honest - it has not been going as well as I had hoped. BUT, I am trying to stay positive! I know I WILL meet a great guy soon - either on match or some other way. Right? Right!

All that being said, I have a question for you lady followers out there.... Do you expect a man to pay for a meal on a first date? I'm not neutral on this - I expect a man to pick up the check on a first date and am really turned off when they don't. I know it's not politically correct, but that's the way I feel. Needless to say, the gentleman - scratch that - man I went out with last night did not pick up the check and that was one (of the many) reasons why there will be no second date for the two of us. Reason #2 is that he was home schooled and I find that a little odd.... Just curious - as independent women living in 2009, what are your thoughts? I'd love to hear them!

Attention All DC Area Preps!

A fabulous new store has opened in my hometown of McLean, VA. I stopped by this afternoon and love, love, love it! It's called the Preppy Pink Pony and it is a preppy girl's paradise. It opened last week so they are still getting things up and running but they have some lovely things. Check out their web site to get an idea of some of the items they offer. They carry many of my favorite brands including Dabney Lee and Lilly Pulitzer. The owner loves Lilly so much that her dog (who hangs out with her in the store) is named Lilly Pulitzer! It was adorable! Here are some of the things I have my eye on....

MCW from Saving the Best for Last tagged me in the Friday Tag Game. All I have to do is answer the 5 questions with 5 answers for each question and then tag 5 of my favorite bloggers and they do the same!

1. What were you doing 10 years ago?

* I was still a new freshman at the College of Charleston and having a really hard time adjusting - I was very homesick and missed my high school friends terribly.
* I was living in a 11' x 16' dorm room with a girl I wasn't so sure about. She was very Southern and prissy and it was a shock to me! Of course now, she is one of my BEST FRIENDS. She and I will be friends forever. :)
* I was traveling to Columbia, SC frequently to visit my sister and her family. She and I always had the best time together!
* I had bangs. Not cool, side swept bangs but unattractive, straight across my forehead bangs.
* I had just bought my first pair of Rainbow flip flops (a must-have at CofC) and still have my original pair ten years later!

2. What are 5 things on your To Do list today?

* Buy and send out a birthday card to one of my friends.
* Go to the mall and look for a new pair of jeans.
* Laundry. Lots of laundry.
* Return something to Michael's and maybe purchase some mums for my front step.
* Buy a bottle of wine for a dinner party tonight.

3. Snacks you enjoy?

* Lightly salted organic popcorn
* Granola bars
* String cheese
* Almonds
* Diet Pepsi

4. Where are 5 places you have lived?

* McLean, VA
* Charleston, SC
* James Island, SC
* Kinnelon, NJ
* That's it! Only four!

5. What are 5 things you would do if you were a billionaire?

* Buy new or pay off the houses of my parents, sisters, brother, and grandmother.
* Take my closest girlfriends on vacation for two weeks to a fabulous five star resort with luxury spa.
* Pick five struggling families to help by paying off a mortgage, buying a home, paying for college, treating them to Christmas gifts, etc.
* Buy and decorate houses in Charleston, SC; Nantucket, MA; New York, NY; London, UK; and Breckenridge, CO.
* Retire and travel, travel, travel. :)

I pass the 5 Friday Tag Day onto...
1. The Niemeyer Nest
2. Through Rose Colored Glasses
3. Stephanie
4. Nautical and Southern
5. Headbands and Handbags

A Letter to J. Crew

I have seen other bloggers do this and now I have my own bone to pick with J. Crew...

Dear J. Crew,

I do not appreciate getting this email from you (see below) three days after I placed an order for a necklace I have been lusting for for several months. Once an item is sold out, please remove it from your web site immediately so that I do not place an order that will never get to me. Leaving the items on your web site implies that you actually have enough in stock and gives hope to the thousands of ladies who covet your delightfully preppy clothing and accessories. I am now forced to begin a daily online stalking of the bronze version of this necklace - waiting patiently for that item to go on sale. Once it does I will purchase it and, hopefully, you will actually have one to send to me.

Bitter, sad, and disappointed in Virginia--
DC Prep

I could not find a picture of the lovely item I attempted to purchase but here is the other color. Now I must wait patiently for this color to go on sale. Anyone have one - in either color - they want to sell me? :)
